Diatomaceous Earth (silicon dioxide) is a sedimentary rock constituted by diatom micro-fossils, a marine alga which plays a vital role in the Ecosystem or seas and oceans, constituting between the 20 and 25% of phytoplanktonic production.
It is a completely natural insecticide known by the European legislation as Biocide. It is extracted from natural quarries, mechanically refined, with no chemical transformation, given it is a non-exhaustible raw material. 

Its use is becoming more popular as it is the most efficient solution against flea, ant and bedbug pests.

Pest control on the soils

In this case we will use grinned Diatomaceous Earth to simplify the mix with the soil. These are the recommended doses of Diatomaceous Earth to control pests like worms or leaf miners on the soils.
Mix 100gr/m2 with the soil
WARNING! If in our soils there are earthworms to produce humus, we should not apply more than 40gr/m2 or you will end up with them too. To eradicate plagues like caterpillars or unwanted worms, we will sprinkle the base of the tree, so that those pests cannot crawl up.

If the pest are snails or slugs, we should sprinkle (spray with grinned diatomaceous earth) the branches with the snails adhere to them; the slugs are mollusks which are very active at dawn, when they come out of “hiding” to feed on the cool hours of the day, that is why when sprinkling the base of the tree we prevent them from coming close.

Air Pest Control

For air pest control we will use micronized Diatomaceous Earth as it is the one recommended to pulverize. These are the recommended doses of pulverized Diatomaceous Earth for pest control in citric.
Scarce plague or plague with weak insect
• 10~20gr/liter pulverized on the entire tree, specially focusing on the area where we found the plague.
Large plague or plague with resistant insect
• 25~30gr/liter pulverized on the entire tree, specially focusing on the area where we found the plague.
Major plague or plague with weak or resistant insect
• 40gr/liter pulverized on the entire tree, specially focusing on the area where we found the plague. As a pre-emptive measure, we will pulverize once every 15 days 20gr/liter.

    How the Diatomaceous Earth works
    The Diatomaceous Earth acts mechanically on insects, on a dual action: it is an abrasive and a desiccator. The particles of grinned diatoms have microscopically sharp edges that are lethal for the exoskeleton of insects. When insects walk on Diatomaceous Earth, the thin particles tear their exterior shells and kill the insect by dehydration. The Diatomaceous Earth Dust (DED) has many advantages over regular pesticides.
    Unlike other pesticides, the risk for insect to be resistant to this pesticide is very low given that it has a physical action, not chemical or metabolic, so it can be used as often as needed. It has a large lifespan.
    When spayed, many insects die, but others are repelled and stay away from the pulverized area, only returning once the effectives of the pesticide has diminished. Diatomaceous Earth keeps stable (in dry places) and may be annulled only by accumulation of domestic dust or other wastes. It has such a low toxicity in mammals that it is used in grain and seed storages. It leaves no chemical residue.

    How to apply and ways of using the diatomaceous earth
    Combat ant, snails, cockroaches and moth plagues.

    Apply the diatomaceous earth spreading dust on all transit places, as well as shelters (floor junction, cracks, ant’s nests). This way, reproduction of the larva is avoided in those places where they hide.

    Diatomaceous Earth to eradicate parasites on animals

    It is very useful against different species of parasites like flees, lice, tick…
    -Brush the fur of the animal against the grain and sprinkle a small amount of diatomaceous earth regularly.
    -Parasite get in contact with the dust immediately.
    -Refresh every 4 or 5 days, repeating the procedure.
    -Avoid contact with eyes and inhaling.

     

    Prophylactic and deodorant use in pets
    You can treat the places where your pets sleep (baskets, pillows or boxes, etc.) by applying from 10-30g per square meter of the diatom dust. Do not forget about corners and hard-to-access places.  Diatomaceous Earth has a very strong pre-emptive action against fleas and other insects, and a high deodorant power against urine, mold and others.

    Use against bedbugs and fleas

    Diatomaceous earth is a safer, more powerful and economical tool than other pesticides and chemical products. If we suspect or know we have these uninvited guests, remember to sprinkle diatoms dust on the frame of the bed, under the mattress and on the corners of the room. As we have said before, the key is to sprinkle the dust onto areas where these bedbugs live or eat.



    Other properties and uses of Diatomaceous Earth
    Apart from the efficiency as a pesticide, Diatomaceous Earth has many other uses:
    Due to its absorbing and deodorant properties, it is very useful to:
    -Clean oil stains on fabrics, sofas, or even leather.
    -Clean urine stains on children’s chairs.
    To do that, cover the area without rubbing. Let it stay for a few hours and then scrub lightly. Finally, vacuum the residual dust.
    Due to its thin and abrasive structure, doing a paste with water and the diatoms, you may clean without scratching the surface or getting the shine out of iron, copper, tin or silver.  
    The abrasive structure allows it to be used as an exfoliating mascara.



    Precautions

    Be careful when choosing the Diatomaceous Earth. There are some brands that are not authorized for consumption in agriculture or food.
    The only risk of Diatomaceous Earth is inhalation. Be aware to use gloves to apply and keep it away from the nostrils to avoid inhaling.
